Awkwafina is Nora from Queens!

Third place, entertainment writing

Awkwafina is a charming and natural comedian who has made a statement in Hollywood. She became more well known in 2018 for her roles in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians.

In 2019, Awkwafina played a leading role in The Farewell . She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. She is the first actress of Asian descent to win this category.

This year, Awkwafina is Nora from Queens premiered and was an instant success. It was already renewed for a second season before the series even premiered. In this comedy series, Awkwafina plays a fictionalized version of herself and the story reflects her life when she lived in Queens.

I watched the premiere of the show and it caught my attention immediately. It opens on a very random dream Nora is having that sets the tone for the light hearted comedy. The opening made the show appear cheesy until it was revealed she was having a dream and it changed to a more realistic style.

Awkwafina’s character is hilariously carefree and brash. She channels the struggle of being forced to grow up in a positive way. She takes the challenge head on and finds a situation that works for her and embraces it. She makes lots of mistakes but shows that mistakes aren’t always a bad or shameful thing. Awkwafina definitely showcases her acting capabilities and is fun to watch.

I think the show is okay. It’s funny and entertaining but I’m not hooked on it. Her character is unique which I find appealing. The other characters like her grandma and dad are also entertaining. I like how her family shows a different Chinese family dynamic as opposed to the stereotypical Chinese family that is somewhat depicted in the show, Fresh Off the Boat .

The show features aspects of Chinese and other Asian cultures but is more focused on Nora’s challenges in navigating life. I like that it features different cultures but isn’t dependent on them to make the show special or different.

Overall, I enjoy Awkwafina is Nora from Queens but it isn’t my favorite show out there. It is a good series to watch for some uplifting entertainment but it isn’t something that I am anticipating and dying to watch every week.
