Greta Thunberg is changing the world.
On Sept. 20, 2019 alone, over four million people joined her climate strike. At only 16-years-old she is the leader of a global movement for climate change activism and the favored runner for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
Greta Thunberg is a climate activist from Sweden who has made her voice heard by striking and encouraging change. She began school striking on Aug. 20, 2018 by herself and since then, she has led millions of people all around the globe in strikes for the climate.
It’s no secret that the planet is changing, and Greta is one person who is actually dedicated to stop this crisis. Since she has started striking, she has given up receiving an education in the name of the climate and future. She has taken measures to reduce her carbon footprint by doing things like eating vegan and traveling by a solar sailboat rather than plane.
The passion and courage she shows to fight for the planet is an inspiration to humanity. Millions of people have followed her in her cause. Her work has especially resonated in young people who see their future and the future of the planet get bleaker every year, and see Greta has a beacon of hope for their future.
I’ve become more aware of my actions because of her. I’ve invested more time to learn about the climate crisis and taken steps to reduce my waste. I realized just how important the health of the planet is for my future. Despite all the great work she has done, Greta still receives hate due to her young age. Many older people look down on her don’t take her seriously.
In response to her speech at the United Nations Climate Change Summit, President Donald Trump took a jab at her on Twitter saying, “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”
In the past, Trump has ignorantly denied the existence of climate change, and now mocks Greta instead of accepting the scientific facts and taking much needed action. Greta didn’t let his condescending words shake her. Instead, she simply wrote, “A very happy girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future” in her Twitter bio.
In the same speech that Trump mocked on Twitter, Greta passionately addressed the world leaders and their lack of action taken to solve this global crisis.
Her tone was blunt when she said, “You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal… And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.”
Greta exemplifies courage. Not only did she address powerful world leaders from 66 different countries around the globe, but stood up to them and held them accountable for their lack of action. She wasn’t intimidated by their power and made her voice heard. Seeing someone the same age as me do so much for one of the biggest issues of my generation is inspiring. She is proving that anyone can make a difference if they tried hard enough; because of her, people around the globe have become more environmentally aware.
She is the catalyst in a movement that is shaking the world. The work that she has accomplished in just a year is exceptional. She has brought attention to climate change which simply can’t be ignored any longer. She is refusing to let her future be ruined by the actions of governments and large corporations. The movement she is leading is bringing some much needed change.
Her actions are changing the world at a crucial part in human history. While many people focus on their own lives and wait for someone else to bring change, Greta is trying to tackle an issue firsthand.
Greta Thunberg is a powerful person who has quickly become an important figure to all generations.
