The Indie Game Scene

In the past decade, we have seen exponential growth in the gaming community. From being a hobby for “nerds” and introverts to being ingrained in pop-culture as one of America’s favorite pastimes.

As gaming has become more mainstream we have seen a rise in small developers making incredibly popular games. These are called Indie games. Indie games are made by very small teams of people that aren’t affiliated with large game companies like EA, Riot or Nintendo.

Most Indie games are sold on a website called Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/). Steam is a host platform for computers that lets people buy and sell games from almost anyone, and it lets Indie developers sell their games easily without having to buy a license from Sony or Microsoft.

Some of the most popular games right now are Indie titles. The games Fall Guys and Among Us are both indie titles with thousands of players every day. The draw of these games is that they are relatively inexpensive for how much content the game has to offer.

Some of the most popular games of today started out as indie games. Minecraft, one of the most popular games in the world, started out as an indie title and slowly became an enormous franchise.

However, there is a drawback to indie games. Because these games aren’t made by large teams with professional anti-cheat software, cheating is more common in indie games than from games developed by more established companies.

Indie games are an amazing way to build communities and bring friends together. The new wave of independent creators has brought new life to the gaming community.
